TREATMENT OF SINUSITIS

The spaces filled with hair on the nose, temple and around the eyes are called sinuses. Sinuses are opened into the nose through channels. The nasal mucosa exists inside the canals; the secretion released by the mucosa provides heating and humidifying of the respiratory tract. Sinusitis is inflammation of this mucosa.

It is classified as acute and chronic sinusitis. Acute sinusitis means newly occurred sinusitis and it may be cured completely by an adequate treatment. Chronic sinusitis means a persistent inflammation in the sinuses and it is usually difficult to treat.

CAUSES OF SINUSITIS

Sinusitis develops easily in a condition that prevents normal operation of the sinuses. It often occurs after upper respiratory tract infections. Because, in such infections, the sinus canals that open into the nose are blocked and sinus secretions do not discharge into the nose and accumulate in the sinuses. Germs thereby reproduce inside the sinus and inflammation develops. Furthermore, deviation of the nasal bone, adenoids, immune system compromise and hypertrophy of concha facilitate development of sinusitis.

SYMPTOMS OF SINUSITIS

Sinusitis is often confused with various headaches, especially migraine. However, symptom of sinusitis is not headache only.

  • Pain occurs on the face, eyes and head (pain increases during coughing, heavy lifting or bending forward).

  • Mild fever
  • Post-nasal drip
  • Exhaustion, tiredness
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • A sense of high pressure on the face
  • Cough

DIAGNOSIS OF SINUSITIS

A detailed medical history is obtained by Ear-Nose-Throat specialist. A detailed physical exam is performed. X-ray and computed tomography (CT) for chronic sinusitis may be needed to evaluate the sinuses.

TREATMENT OF SINUSITIS

Majority of the cases with acute sinusitis may be treated without need of antibiotherapy by early diagnosis. If infection has bacterial origin and is persistent, antibiotherapy is applied. Decongestants, painkillers, nasal spray or drops also help to treat. If sinusitis is caused by allergies, the causative agent should be eliminated. Smoking should be avoided during treatment.

Surgical methods may be selected in chronic sinusitis. Balloon sinuplasty may be performed depending on the patient. In the post-sinus surgery period, dressings should be avoided without delay and sinusitis triggering reasons should be avoided.
