NASAL CONGESTION

In case of mouth breathing due to nasal congestion, the oxygen taken in cannot be kept sufficiently in the lungs and the blood oxygen level decreases. decrease of oxygen level in the blood may cause some conditions such as hypertension, cardiac rhythm problems or cardiac failure. Long term nasal congestions may cause very severe health problems if left untreated.

Burun Tıkanıklığı Tedavisi

Since the babies cannot inhale and exhale from mouth within first 6 months, they may breathe through the nose only. Nasal congestion in the babies affect breathing, sleeping and feeding as well as development of the baby negatively. Therefore, nasal congestionshould not be ignored.

DIAGNOSIS OF NASAL CONGESTION

After a detailed history taking, physical exam is performed. An endoscopic nasal examination enables to detect the condition properly. Computed tomography or allergy tests may be needed depending on the cause.

HOW IS NASAL CONGESTION TREATED?

Treatment of nasal congestion depends on the cause. Some structural causes for congestion such as septum deviation, adenoid hypertrophy, concha hypertrophy or conditions such as chronic sinusitis, concha bullosa (air in the concha) are resolved by surgical procedure. However, medical therapy is performed innasal congestionscaused by infection or allergy. Decongestant drops and sprays, antihistaminic drugs, antibiotics are usually used.

Vaccination may be necessary for chronic allergy problem. The patients may support the treatment by keeping the environment humid, having a warm shower, lying on the opposite side of the obstructed nostril, avoiding smoking environments, making sniffing and swallowing movements or trying to blow from the nose slightly.

CONCHA BULLOSA SURGERY

Concha bullosa is existence of an air cell preventing the air flow in the middle concha. Concha bullosa surgery is partial removal of the concha bullosa through endoscopic surgery.

If the concha bullosa which is randomly detected in the tomography causes sinusitis attacks, migraine attacks and peristent nasal congestion, surgical removal is suggested. The procedure is a minor surgery and does not require any care or medical therapy It is usually performed with other surgical procedures of the nose.

AFTER CONCHA BULLOSA SURGERY

There is not any specific instructions for care after concha bullosa surgery except cleaning and moisturising the nose with ocean water sprays.
